ABSTRACT
A student away survey measurement work–study program was organized by the Department of Polish Architecture of the Faculty of Architecture of the Warsaw University of Technology in July of 2021. Measurements and survey drawings of the neo–Gothic Church of Saint Lawrence in Kochanówka were developed as a part of related academic activities.
The village of Kochanówka (German: Stolzhagen) is located approximately six kilometers south of Lidzbark Warmiński. It was founded by Henryk Luter, a Warmia village head, between 1333 and 1342. Its charter was confirmed by way of a prerogative of incorporation issued by Bishop Jan Stryprocki on February 5, 1362. The majestic, gigantic mass of the neo–Gothic church towers over an oval–plan village concentrated around an oval square with ponds. By locating the building on a hilltop it seems to be even more commanding and its silhouette is visible from neighboring villages and localities.
The church as measured by students was erected in 1918 on an extended rectangular plan with a narrow er polygonal chancel, a sacristy and a porch as well as a tall tower melded into the main mass and covered by a pediment roof. Although the present church was created barely one hundred years ago, the first mention of the existence of a church on this site dates from the second half of the 14th century. Today’s interior still includes several historical elements of an earlier Baroque church that was demolished in 1911.
The article sums up work performed within the framework of the student survey measurement work–study program as well as an analysis of the spatial context and attempts at tracing the construction history of the church, including reasons for building such a massive church on the grounds of a small Warmia village.
