ABSTRACT
The article presents the history of the rural Gothic parish church (currently a Greek Orthodox church) in Asuny [German: Assaunen], formerly Prussia. It is a small building erected in stages over the course of the 15th century. The church maintained its original Gothic look almost completely right up to the 20th century. However, it underwent significant remodeling three times over the past 120 years. First, it was subject to renovation work in 1906. Subsequently, it was rebuilt after the destruction of the First World War. Following the Second World War it was converted into a Greek Orthodox church. The first two reconstruction projects were performed by one of the most important architects engaged in religious architecture in East Prussia—Friedrich (Fritz) Heitmann. The work he undertook after the destruction of the First World War was probably his last job. Analysis of his design allows an identification of elements characteristic of the final phase of this creativity. It is also a good illustration of his work in the field of heritage protection. The rebuilding of the church in Asuny was also an element of a broader effort—the reconstruction of the entire province in the wake of the destruction of the First World War.
